The Story
Overview
The Tank Must Large's rectangular case traces a continuous design lineage to Louis Cartier's 1917 original — a format predating most modern watch conventions and unchanged in its essential geometry. The WSTA0054 is the claret configuration: red lacquered dial, red alligator strap, a deliberate monochromatic colour statement that was part of Cartier's 2021 Tank Must relaunch. The colourway has since been discontinued and no longer appears in Cartier's current catalogue.
The case is stainless steel in the Tank's signature rectangular architecture — parallel brancards running from the lugs along the case flanks, blue sapphire cabochon crown set into the case. The claret dial is lacquered and flat: Roman numeral chapters, blued steel hands, rail-track minute chapter at the perimeter. The strap is red alligator leather with an ardillon buckle — the colour extends from dial through strap as a single unbroken statement.
The Tank Must runs a quartz movement, which is the appropriate choice for a case this slim. A mechanical calibre at these proportions requires case depth to house the movement architecture; quartz allows Cartier to hold the Tank's established dimensions without compromise. Battery life runs approximately six to eight years between changes.
The claret Tank Must Large occupies a specific position: a discontinued colourway on a model that Cartier continues to produce and service in other configurations. That combination — ongoing brand support and service infrastructure, limited retail supply of this specific dial and strap pairing — is the relevant acquisition argument. Collectors who want the colour-statement Tank Must variants will find the claret increasingly difficult to source unworn; this example has June 2026 papers. Brand new, unworn, complete with box and papers dated June 2026, at RM15,000.
