Overview

The Santos de Cartier is available in three sizes; the Medium at 35.1mm is the configuration that sits most naturally across a range of wrist sizes without committing to the Large's more assertive footprint. The WSSA0029 is the Medium in stainless steel with silvered opaline dial: the reference that carries the Santos' design language in its fullest classical expression without the scale that makes the 39.8mm Large a considered choice. The design originates from the 1904 commission for Alberto Santos-Dumont, and the square case with exposed screws that came from that brief has been in continuous production in some form since.

The case is stainless steel, 35.1mm square, with eight exposed screws on the polished bezel. The silvered opaline dial carries Roman numerals, a chemin-de-fer minute chapter ring, and blued steel sword-shaped hands. The silvered opaline reads warmer and richer than a plain white dial; under varied light, it shifts between grey and silver. The composition is classically Cartier: legible, architectural, and built around the dial's typography rather than complications or material embellishment.

The movement is the Calibre 1847 MC, Cartier's in-house automatic with a 42-hour power reserve, anti-magnetic nickel-phosphorus components, and 100-metre water resistance. The watch ships with both the integrated stainless steel bracelet and a leather strap; Cartier's QuickSwitch system allows interchangeable fitting without tools, and the SmartLink bracelet permits tool-free link adjustment. For a watch that moves between dress and casual contexts, the two-strap configuration covers the full range from the box.

The Santos Medium in steel holds a specific place in the secondary market: it is less available than the Large, and buyers who have sized the 39.8mm Large against their wrist and found it too prominent arrive at the Medium as the resolution. At RM24,500 against an RRP of RM32,700, this is 25% below retail for a November 2023 piece in excellent condition with full documentation. We are currently seeing Medium Santos examples trade in this range; the size, complete strap complement, and silvered opaline dial represent the Santos proposition at its most balanced.
