Overview 

The Rolex Explorer 1 reference 124273 is a polarising watch. Rolex took the most deliberately austere tool watch in its catalogue and introduced yellow gold — to the bezel, the hands, the numerals, and the centre bracelet links. The response among collectors has never been neutral. You either think it works or you think it misunderstands what the Explorer is.

The 36mm case is Oystersteel, identical in profile to the all-steel 124270. The matte black dial retains the 3-6-9 configuration — but in 18k yellow gold rather than steel. Gold numerals and hands against a dark ground, with a smooth yellow gold bezel above. Chromalight fill on the hands and numerals. The two-tone Oyster bracelet runs brushed Oystersteel outer links with polished yellow gold centre links throughout.

The movement is the Calibre 3230 — the same as the all-steel Explorer. Chronergy escapement, Parachrom hairspring, 70-hour power reserve, Superlative Chronometer to ±2 seconds per day. The gold accents are cosmetic; the watch performs identically.

At RM47,500 against retail of RM61,800, brand new and unworn with box and papers dated November 2025. Whether the yellow gold justifies the premium over the steel version is a question of taste, not function — which is precisely what makes this reference interesting.
