Tudor Black Bay 54 - 37mm 79000N 2024 [Preowned]

Overview 

The Tudor Black Bay 54, reference 79000N, is a direct recreation of Tudor's first dive watch, the 1954 reference 7922, down to details most heritage reissues smooth over: the small crown, the absence of a red triangle at 12 o'clock, and a bezel insert stripped of minute markings to match the original's plain scale. Introduced in 2023, it returns the Black Bay line to the 7922's actual 37mm proportions rather than reinterpreting them at a larger, more commercial size.

The case is 37mm stainless steel with polished and satin-brushed surfaces, sized to match the 1954 original rather than the 39mm and larger cases across the rest of the Black Bay range. The unidirectional rotating bezel carries a matte black aluminium insert with no minute graduations, staying faithful to the 7922's minimalist scale. The black dial carries applied indices and a mixed hand set true to the original: a snowflake hour hand paired with a pencil-profile minute hand and a lollipop seconds hand, not the full snowflake pairing used elsewhere in the Black Bay line. The gilt-toned printing on the minute track and indices, against bright white Super-LumiNova lume, is the specific vintage note. The dial carries no date window, keeping it symmetrical and matching the 7922's layout.

The movement is Tudor's manufacture Calibre MT5400, COSC certified, with a silicon balance spring for magnetic resistance and a 70-hour power reserve. Water resistance is 200 metres via screw-down crown. This piece comes on the riveted three-link steel bracelet, Tudor's modern reproduction of the folded-rivet bracelets fitted to 1950s and 60s Tudor divers, with solid links and screw construction underneath the vintage look, closed with the T-fit clasp for 8mm of tool-free micro-adjustment.

The Black Bay 54 occupies a specific position within the Black Bay range: it is the only reference built to the original 7922's actual case size rather than a modernised interpretation of it, which is what separates it from the 39mm Black Bay 58 and the larger Black Bay Fifty-Eight variants that also draw on 1950s references. Against an RRP of RM18,430, this piece is priced at RM12,500, roughly 32% below new, for a piece with complete documentation and under two years from purchase.
